Graduate English Awards

Here are all of the awards that are available. Students should apply for awards depending on how they and their writing fit the criteria below.

1. The Razak Dahmane Award for Best MA Thesis:

Description: This is awarded to the best M.A. Thesis or creative writing closure in English. It is named for late English professor, Razak Dahmane, who highly valued graduate students and the original work that they produced.

Eligibility: Any thesis or creative writing closure completed by Spring Semester’s close from an M.A. candidate in English.

Submission Guidelines: Please submit the entire document electronically to the department secretary.

  • The winning thesis is nominated for the University M.A. thesis award, which has prestigious and monetary value.
  • Letters of endorsement may be submitted.

2. The Marylin Ostrowski Memorial Award for best graduate essay

  • for finest graduate essay written over the course of a year (incl. summer term) for ANY course, seminar, tutorial
  • Student can be nominated by any member of the faculty
  • Letters of endorsement can be submitted with documents.
  • Submit three copies of essay to the English office, UHB 3050 before March 30

3. The Marylin Ostrowski Memorial Award for best undergraduate essay

  • for finest graduate essay written over the course of a year (incl. summer term) for ANY course, seminar, tutorial
  • Student can be nominated by any member of the faculty
  • Letters of endorsement can be submitted with documents.
  • Submit three copies of essay to the English office, UHB 3050 before March 30

4. The Alfred and Mildred Roese Memorial Scholarship bestowed on “a deserving M.A. with creative flair and a high GPA”:

  • Student must submit a statement of why they deserve the award and how they meet the criteria. They can include any evidence they think relevant with the statement (in the form of text, presentation, etc), including letters of recommendation.
  • Recipient must have a GPA of 3.75.
  • Recipient must display financial need.
  • Recipient must be a graduate student pursuing a degree in either English or Communications.
  • Student can be nominated by any member of the faculty.
  • Submit three copies of statement and evidence to the English office, UHB 3050 before March 30.
  • Scholarship isn’t renewable.

5. The Rose Richmond Scholarship for Female Authors (grad or undergrad)

  • Preference given to female students studying English.
  • Students can nominate themselves for this award!
  • Recipient should be in good academic standing.
  • Submission Data: A 20-40 page portfolio in any genre(s) of creative writing
  • Further Material: Letters of recommendation appreciated; the designee must  intend continuation of study.
  • Submit 3 copies of portfolio material to the English office, UHB 3050.

More Details about these Scholarships and Awards:

  • The Dahmane, Ostrowski, and Roese awards require that a professor nominate you and your writing for the award. (If you want a nomination, simply ask your favorite professor!)
  • Writers can nominate themselves for the Rose Richmond Award.
  • Graduate Student Awards: Dahmane Prize, Roese Memorial,  Ostrowski Award, and Rosie Richmond Scholarship.
  • Undergraduate Awards: Ostrowski Award and Rose Richmond Scholarship.
  • Nominees must turn in 3 copies of writing and indicate the award which they are competing for.
