How Private is your Data?

Yesterday kicked off Data Privacy Month, and we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to share some tips with you all and point you towards some excellent resources!

With so much in our life being migrated to the web, it’s more important than ever to make sure your data is safe and protected. Protecting your private information is absolutely essential in just about every situation—from using your social networks and online shopping, to ensuring all passwords are strong and unique.

data_protectionCheck out some of our quick tips to get you started with protecting your data:

  • Make your passwords:

o   Strong (more than 8 characters with symbols, upper and lowercase letters, numbers, etc.)

o   A different password for each account

o   Private! Do not share them with others

o   Change them often

  • Be smart online—remember what you put out on the internet will stay there, keep a clean machine, and avoid clicking suspicious links, emails and other items.
  • Unplug! When your machine is up and running nonstop, scammers can access information 24/7. Shut down when not in use to be safe.

One of the most important things to know about technology is how to protect yourself. If you would like more tips, feel free to come see ITS Client Services in the lower level of Brookens, or check out Educause’s Data Privacy Month page and Stay Safe Online.
