Tools to Ace Finals

Can you believe finals week is already right around the corner? We can’t, and we’re guessing your students can’t either. Whether they’ve spent the semester keeping up on readings and assignments or will be opening the text book for the first time in the next few weeks, finals can be a stressful time.  But don’t worry-we have a few free online tools that can help your students make their studying a breeze!

Flashcard Exchange

Browse through tons of subjects and find flashcard sets for anything you could possibly need-from vocabulary on the GRE to different languages. Flashcard exchange gives users the ability to not only create their own sets of flashcards but also access sets of flashcards created by thousands of other users. Import information, add audio or images, and even utilize the “hint” feature. This is a great tool to share with your students for them to make use of during finals!

Quizlet

We’ve discussed Quizlet in the past, but it is one of the best free study tools we have come across. It is another flashcard-based study tool available at no cost online, but offers students the ability to compete with other students in “Test Mode” and play other challenging games. Another advantage of Quizlet is the portability-for users of smartphones or other mobile devices, Quizlet offers various apps to make studying on the go easy!

Make sure you share these tools with your students, they will definitely help to make studying time a little more exciting and productive!

Your New Favorite Web Tool

It’s a pretty well-known fact that college students aren’t exactly “rolling in the dough”, so when it comes to buying software packages like Microsoft Office, it can be a bit of a problem. Instead of trekking through the cold and snow to the library every time Word is needed to write a paper, or PowerPoint to create a presentation, try Microsoft Office Live.

This tool is available to anyone with a Windows Live ID (which is free!). Simply sign up, sign in, and start creating documents in condensed versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. While these applications may be condensed versions, they still offer many of the features that are most often used in the full versions. Another perk to using Microsoft Office Live is that after creating their documents, users are able to save their files to SkyDrive so they can access them anywhere, anytime. Free versions of Office plus a storage space for documents in the cloud? I’m sold, and your students will be too! So save them (and yourself!) some money, time, and stress by utilizing the greatness of Microsoft Office Live.

Studying made Easy

Are you a fan of quizzes but your students are not? Next time you give the “dreaded” quiz, tell them about http://Quizlet.com. This great website provides over 4 million sets of flashcards for any given subject. As a graduate student, I’ve taken an endless amount of quizzes, and really wish I knew about this website earlier.

Not only are students able to create flashcards or use those made by others, Quizlet offers new challenges to students with a “Test Mode”, and offers competitive study games. The best part of Quizlet is the portability (apps are available for a variety of mobile devices) and the ability to study with peers in a group. Be sure to let your students know about this great (and free!) tool so they don’t have to dread the “dreaded” quiz again.
