Update: 9/28/2011 10:00 am
We were finally able to persuade the AITS folks to delete the conflicting distribution list on their system. The sync last night worked normally and the UIS Faculty list is also functioning normally. AITS is planning on creating a new list object tomorrow but they will ensure its name doesn’t conflict with one of ours, so things should be fine. We will continue to monitor and keep you updated should things change.
Update: 9/23/2011 10:00 am
The distribution list name change that was performed by the AITS/OBFS folks did not resolve the issue. Even with the object name changed, the problem continues to arise. We are now asking them to exclude that list object from the nightly syncs. In the meantime, we will continue to delete the bad object each day so our own distribution is not affected.
Update: 9/22/2011 4:00 pm
The AITS/OBFS folks have renamed their list to “OBFS UIS Faculty” which should resolve the conflict problem. We will check things again tomorrow morning to validate the fix.

We are in contact with the UA Exhange Administrators. They are trying to make contact with the problem distribution list owner to arrange for a name change or some other remedy. In the meantime, several Network Services folks are checking each morning to remove the bad entry as early as possible.
There has been an ongoing issue with the faculty distribution list for the past week or so. The symptom is that the sender receives an error message when they try to send mail to this list. The error is “the e-mail address for UIS Faculty is invalid.” They can hit ‘ignore’ and the message will typically go through. In one reported case we’re aware of, the message did not go through and instead returned a fatal error.
Brian performed several troubleshooting steps on this issue last week. One Microsoft-recommended solution ended up clearing the contents of the list entirely. The list was repopulated with known faculty from Banner, but some non-faculty names had to be manually added back in.
Brian was able to narrow down the issue to it being a problem with a duplicate list name in the University of Illinois Exchange system. UIS synchronizes the UI Exchange information with our system daily. Each time the sync takes place, it breaks our faculty list. Turning off the daily synchronization might keep this from happening but would most likely create new issues.
Once a day as early as possible, Brian is deleting the bad entry on our side so the list functions again. We have also submitted a trouble ticket informing the UI Exchange administrators of the issue and requesting they delete or rename their list.
