Automatic IMAP Configuration For Thunderbird

The Network Services team have configured our external facing email systems to allow very easy automatic configuration of the Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail client. All an off-campus user has to do is install the client and enter their e-mail address and password into Thunderbird, then Thunderbird will retrieve the rest of the configuration information directly from our servers, including the settings for secure authentication.

Updated documentation about all IMAP support for Exchange 2010 is being developed and will be put on our web pages when completed. My special thanks to Chris Mueller and Brian Truter for setting this up.

Changes to Dell iSCSI Switches Tomorrow Morning

UPDATE: Dec 8, 2011 @ 6:55

The configuration work on the Dell iSCSI switches is mostly completed with no service disruption. A few settings changes will be applied later, but should not have any impact on operations of the SAN or servers.

We have been working with Dell support to troubleshoot an issue with the new Camtasia Relay server. We’ve made several changes that have stabilized things pretty well. However, we’ve noticed that there are still a few iSCSI network settings that did not get set according to Dell’s published best-practices document when the system was installed last summer. So tomorrow morning during the regular maintenance window, I will apply those settings. These changes should not have any detrimental impact to the operation of the SAN or the servers and applications that communicate with it. All work should be completed within the maintenance window time frame.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

End Point Management Tool Deployment

Good Afternoon –

I am writing to inform all IT professionals of a new project to deploy two endpoint management systems. Endpoint management allows desktop and server administrators to manage networked desktop, mobile, and server computers. The two systems that are being implemented are Microsoft SCCM and IBM Tivoli Endpoint Management (formally known as BigFix). These systems offer functionality such as Hardware Asset Management, Application and Patch Management, Software Updates, Power Management, Remote Functionality, Software Distribution, and OS Deployment.

The outcome of this project is to develop a service that has the potential to scale to the entire enterprise as well as provide immediate benefit to early adopter groups. The initial deployment includes the following:

* Providing hardware and software infrastructure services

* Develop a long term plan and provide training and support

* Create the framework for a sustainable service

The Office of the ECIO is sponsoring this project and providing project management resources. In addition, financial resources for this project were provided by Provosts on all three campuses plus University Administration. As of this point a formal project charter has been developed and was approved by Michael Hites and the campus CIOs. We are still in the early planning stages of the project and a website is in development which will provide scope, milestones, project information, and how to participate.

If you have any questions please contact the project team at epm@uillinois.edu.

Equallogic SAN Controller Replacement

UPDATE: Dec 6, 2011 @ 07:45

The controller replacement went smoothly with no disruption of services.

The Dell Equallogic SAN is experiencing abnormal behavior in one of its controllers. Dell is sending out a replacement part tonight and we have scheduled a replacement of the suspect component at 7:30 AM tomorrow (Tuesday) morning. This should be a non-disruptive maintenance procedure that should take just a few minutes to complete. We do not expect any service disruption.
