UISMAIL9

It appears that uismail9 has died. This server was an Exchange 2003 mailbox server. It had no remaining mailboxes at this point, but was being used for SMTP relaying by some devices and applications.

As this server was slated to be decommissioned already, we are not going to attempt to get it back online, but instead focus on moving known devices and applications using it to the new mail hubs.

Welcome, Zach!

Zach Logsdon has joined the ISAT team as an Information Technology Support Associate.  He’ll be working on many projects with Jeff, Mike, and I, and will also be instrumental in supporting faculty in the use of technology in their courses.  He works Monday-Thursday 1pm-10pm, Friday 11:30-5pm and is a much needed and appreciated resource for our evening courses.  Please join me in welcoming him to ITS!

Mail Servers – Rebooting

The Exchange 2010 mail servers will undergo rolling reboots this morning to do Windows Updates. No mail outage should occur, but users may experience a temporary disconnect/reconnect as the active mailboxes switchover to alternate servers.

Lync audio/video calls and web conferencing with Urbana Lync users work now!

The issue we were having with not being able to do point to point audio/video calls and web conferencing with federated users has been resolved.  The fix involved setting up a static route for our internal Lync users on the Lync edge server.

When you get a chance, please do some test audio/video calls and web conferencing sharing with your Urbana Lync peers and report back your results with a comment to this blog.

Mail Server Decommisioning

UISMAIL9, one of the last two remaining Exchange 2003 servers, has been shut down for its scheduled removal at the end of the semester.

Any applications that were hard coded to use this mail server will need to be reconfigured. Just a suggestion – it would be wise to not hard code applications to use specific domain controllers or mail servers, etc. when at all possible. Using the MX records or other redundant methods will ensure the application keeps on working when a server is decomissioned (or dies).
