Wireless AP group changes

Kevin will be creating a new group and moving all of the housing wireless AP units into this new group Thursday Nov 1 at 5:00am. Having different groups allows us to assign different SSID’s to the groups and in the future will give us the flexibility to associate different subnets to the groups, relieving some of the congestion currently occurring.
The AP units need to restart so there will be some disruption of service (5-10 minutes) while the AP units are restarting.

Thanks

ITS Emails to Campus

I just wanted to make sure everyone was aware that we have two standard templates for sending out official ITS emails to the campus that everyone in the department is welcome to use – one for notifications and one for maintenance announcements.  These templates are available at \\uisweb1\ISAT$ in folders labeled ITSMaintenance and ITSNotifications.  If you are unsure how to edit/send them, just let me know and I’m happy to give you a quick refresher (it’s painless, I promise!).

SharePoint migration from November 2-5

What is Happening

Beginning Friday, November 2 at 7:00 a.m. until Monday, November 5 at 12:00 noon, the University of Illinois SharePoint sites, currently hosted by AITS, will be in a Read Only state due to the migration from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2010.  On Monday, November 5 (no later than 12:00 noon), when you access SharePoint, you will be accessing SharePoint 2010.

Please Note:

  • SharePoint sites hosted at http://intranet.uillinois.edu are the only SharePoint sites impacted.
  • Your SharePoint URLs will not be changing.
  • If you need to make a change to your documents during the read only period, open the document and save it to your desktop or a shared folder.  You can upload your modified document after the SharePoint environment is restored on November 5.

Changes from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2010

  • SharePoint 2010 has a new look and feel.
  • You will see a new ribbon (toolbar) at the top of the page which looks much like other Microsoft Office 2010 ribbons (toolbars).
  • After the migration, if you experience problems opening a document, you should click on the pull-down menu next to the file name (instead of just clicking on the name/link), and choose Open in Word/Excel.  If you still cannot access the document, contact your SharePoint Site Collection Administrator to have the permissions settings verified.

If You Have Questions

…file a service desk request with the SharePoint Service Manager at sharepointsupport@uillinois.edu

…call the AITS Service Desk: 312-996-4806 (from UIC); 217-333-3102 (from UIS/Illinois)

For Additional Information

Thank you for assisting us in making this migration a success.

Server Backup Configuration Reports

The Network Services group has begun publishing reports detailing the configuration of backups for all monitored servers on the UIS campus. The latest report (as well as historical reports) can be found on eDocs at the following location:

https://edocs.uis.edu/Departments/ITS/Network%20Services%20Team/System%20Support/Backup%20Configuration%20Reports

In this folder there is also a document that describes how to interpret the information contained in the backup configuration reports.

The network services team will provide regular updates for this information by generating new reports periodically (typically weekly). Owners of systems and servers that should be monitored, managed, or backed up by the Unitrends enterprise backup system should ensure that their server is listed in this report and that it is configured as expected. Any discrepancies should be brought to the attention of Curtis or Clay as soon as possible.

If you have any questions about this process, please let Curtis know.

Thanks!

uishelix1 is Currently Down

uishelix1 is currently down.  There are many media files on this server that are now unavailable – including videos from BOT meetings, GoToMeeting recordings, Lync recordings, Echo360 recordings. The TSC may receive calls from faculty, staff, and students trying to access these resources.  Tulio and Clay are working on resolving the situation as quickly as possible.

RAVE Test

We ran the test twice with 102 email address and everything worked fine.
We are not sure that the number of messages was large enough to put a strain on the Barracuda or the mail system. So we either need to create thousands of test email account to test with or schedule a full test again and see if the changes we have made really did improved the performance.

Thanks for your patience
