Reminder of ICCN work 5-7 tomorrow morning

Both of the UIS ICCN nodes will be worked on Saturday Sept 21 (5 to 7 am)

First in Node 2 (UHB basement) the switch will be completely replaced.

Then in Node 1 (HSB) a Module on the switch will be replaced.

ITS does not anticipate any interruptions of services to the campus however

Please monitor your services and let ITS know if there are any disruptions.

Thanks for your help.

FW: ICCN work on the UIS campus on 9/21

This is a continuation of work begun in August to replace ICCN switches and upgrade the UIS connections to the ICCN. Shellie, Greg and Brandon please note that one of the nodes in Urbana, routers (ur2rtr) is also being upgraded and will cause a VLL outage during this time frame. —–Original Message—– From: Brown, Aaron L [mailto:aaronb@illinois.edu] Sent: Wednesday, September 18, 2013 10:33 PM To: Voyles, Jamie N; Zepp, Kevin Cc: pawinan@ILSTU.EDU; Kollross, Matt; Skaar, Chris Subject: ICCN work on the UIS campus on 9/21 Hi Jamie, I wanted to confirm that we’re okay to be on the UIS campus this Saturday to perform more ICCN upgrades. Phil and Matt will be on the UIS campus Saturday morning around 5:00am to bring the new sp2rtr online. In addition to needing in University Hall one of the guys will need in the Data Center at HSB and in the Telecom room at Brookens to move to the new fiber I tested a few weeks ago. Once the work is complete they will need to get back in the HSB DC to replace a module in the sp1rtr router. Once the new connections are up and stable we’ll return the fiber used for the original connections. Should they use the same procedures as last time to gain entrance to the spaces? At the same time the sp2rtr is being replaced the ur2rtr router on the Urbana campus will also be replaced. The impact of the ur2rtr being down is that VLL between UIS and PPSB will be down. new media room door locks

There are two new locks on the doors entering the back of Media services in BRK

Both locks have proximity readers which are active.  If you have a proximity card and would like access please let me know I can add your card into the system.

Both locks also have keypads, this is where it gets tricky, they are different software versions so on the door opening to the back of BRK auditorium the code is #555555.  The lock on the door opening towards the elevator the code is 555555*.  Suttle differences but they are different.

I don’t know, why they change the pattern!  I wanted to make sure everyone knows that they are different.

door access BRK 134

We have installed one of the new wireless door locks.  The lock is not completed, there is no proximity reader yet and the card swipe is not configure.  The keypad does work the current code is #555555, pound sign followed by six fives.  We hope to have the card swipe working tomorrow Wednesday Aug 7.  The second door and the proximity functions are 2 to 3 weeks out.

Sorry for the inconvenience.  The old lock is the same code as before nothing has changed on that door yet.

Subject: ICCN Event: Fiber cut between Decatur and Urbana IL (08/06/2013) 0045)

## Description ##

At approximately 0045 on 08/06/2013, ICCN engineers were notified of a fiber cut on the ICCN network between Decatur and Champaign, IL.  Calls to the fiber vendor confirmed that this was scheduled maintenance.  The ICCN had not been notified of this maintenance.  The fiber vendor stated that the outage window is from 0001 to 0600.

## Impact ##

Redundant Layer 3 services on the ICCN automatically rerouted to recover from this fiber cut.  Optical services that traverse the ICCN path between Urbana and Decatur will remain down for the length of the outage.

## Notes ##

ICCN Engineers will monitor the situation and send a note when all services have been restored or if the outage exceeds the expected outage window.  We will also work with the vendor to ensure that, in the future, proper notifications are sent so that we might inform our customers of potential service impacting events.  If you have questions about this maintenance or experience issues as a result, please contact ICCN Operations.

Switch Virtualization tonight

The Network team will be reconfiguring the two core switches to vitalize them (act as one switch)

The advantages are

                Increased bandwidth

                Greater redundancy

                Wireless high availability

There will be an impact on campus as we move through the steps most significantly, the wireless will be down while we reconfigure the switch in HSB.  Optimistically this should be less than 30 minutes others services should continue functioning through the secondary switch in UHB.  Once the configurations are complete on the HSB switch we will shut down the UHB switch and reconfigure it, this should have no impact on the wireless.  When both switches have been reconfigured we will run the VSS (virtualization command).

The plan is to start at 6:30p and to be finished by 9:00p

If need arises to revert to the previous configurations on the two switches those configs are available and can be reloaded.

Please let me know if there is some reason we should not proceed.

VSS Update

As we began the process this morning it became apparent early on that it was going to be much more disruptive than we had thought.  So rather than cause problems we decided to postpone.

We will be trying again Monday Aug 5 starting at 6:30 pm to approximately 9:00

If you have something planned for this time frame please let Kevin, Scott or myself know.

There will be loss of wireless network while the HSB switch is removed from the network, reconfigured and restarted.
