What’s Happenin’ at UIS on SATURDAY, AUGUST 29

Inaugural Welcome Week Bike Ride | Meet at TRAC 10am, return est. 1pm | Come join us as we ride from campus to Scheels and back. Meet at TRAC at 10am with your bike, if you have one. If not, Campus Recreation has 10 bikes and helmets* available for students to check out. We will be taking a break at Scheels, so bring some $ for lunch (or some fudge). Click on the following link to register: https://illinois.edu/fb/sec/5934849 *Helmets must be worn by students checking out bikes. Special thanks to Lake Pointe Grill, who will be providing the food—pulled pork sandwiches, chips, potato salad and cookies for 800 people. If you’ve eaten at Lake Pointe Grill (and I hope you have), you know the food’s going to be great.

This will be the third time that Lake Pointe Grill has partnered with UIS for the event.

Besides great food, you and your family will be able to enjoy fun activities, like ladder golf, bean bag toss, and a water balloon toss as well as an inflatable bounce house for children. There will also be an opportunity to get pictures taken with props in a photo booth and a chance to dunk your favorite student-athlete or coach in our dunk tank.

mockingbirdWelcome Week Concert | 7pm TRAC Lawn | The Student Activities Committee, Student Life and the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs presents, up and coming Nashville country-rock musicians, Mockingbird Sun, and Ryan Lafferty to perform energetic sets, featuring a modern country sound. Head on out to the TRAC lawn to kick off the new school year with some great music and other UIS students!

Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Museum Trip | 10:00-11:30am | Sponsored by History Club | Students will meet in the front of the lower level of UHB on Friday morning at 10:00 AM to check in and get a finalized head count. We will then make our way to the provided transportation and head to the museum (629 South 7th street Springfield, IL 62703) and enjoy a private tour of the museum and a chance to speak with the local member of the National Women’s Relief Corps. The tour and visit should take roughly an hour. Around 11:15 we will head back to UIS and unload in the same spot that we were picked up at in time for a causal lunch in PAC. Lunch, although not officially part of the HC event, is open to any student (from the fieldtrip) wanting to grab a quick bite and get to know each other or answer any questions new students might have.

Students Allied for a Greener Earth, (SAGE), will be hosting ‘An Afternoon at Lincoln Memorial Gardens’ on Friday, August 28th from 12:30pm – 3pm.

Transportation to and from UIS, as well as a ‘light’ lunch will be provided.

Students interested in visiting Lincoln Memorial Garden should meet at the PAC Teardrop (daytime bus stop area). Vans will depart the UIS Teardrop at 12:30pm. and will return to UIS at 3pm.

NOTE: if you previously sent an email to ‘sage@uis.edu‘, please meet the group at the UIS Teardrop by 12:30p.m.

About Lincoln Memorial Garden:  Designed by Jen Jensen, a Danish-born landscape architect, Lincoln Memorial Garden was founded in 1936 to honor Abraham Lincoln and represent the landscape that President Lincoln would have been familiar with in the Midwest. At the Garden, listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of 1992, you can walk along a trail, bird-watch or enjoy the wildflowers and the beautiful scenery at your leisure.
