Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers need to limit their face-to-face interactions. The UIS IRB has developed guidelines for using technology for human subjects research.

Online Surveys

UIS subscribes to Qualtrics, a powerful tool for conducting online surveys. ITS has instructions for how to use Qualtrics. Read our blog for how to conduct an online anonymous survey.

Telephone Interviews

Instead of meeting subjects in-person for an interview, you can conduct the interviews over the phone. You will need to make adjustments to the consent form, since you won’t be able to collect signatures. The UIS IRB has written guidelines for telephone consent procedures.

Online Focus Groups

UIS subscribes to Zoom, an online video conferencing platform. ITS has job aids for how to establish your account on Zoom and use its various tools, including security and recording settings. Again, you won’t be able to collect signatures, so you will need to adjust the consent document. The UIS IRB has written guidelines for using Zoom in research.

Please make an appointment with the IRB staff to discuss your ideas for conducting remote research.
