Summer Goals: Gainful Employment

If you are like many college students, you will be spending a large part of your summer working at your “summer job.” Maybe you have found a job that pays well or one that allows you time outdoors or something in your field of study. I would love to hear about your summer job (email mnoll1@uis.edu or leave a comment below.)

Did you know that your summer job can boost your resume even if it is not directly related to your future career goals? If you are a lifeguard, you are developing teamwork and customer service skills. If you are babysitting, like I did during college summers, you are providing a safe, enjoyable, and comfortable environment for those within your care. No matter what job you are doing, you are more than likely reporting to a supervisor who can serve as a positive reference for you in the future. Rise to the top at your summer job and see what doors open for you as a result.

If you have a summer job, you will want to revise your resume to include it. The Career Development Center at UIS can help you create or revise your resume, even during the summer, to ensure that it reflects your experiences in the best possible light. Their website contains several videos about job seeking such as “How to Make Your Resume POP.” It’s also not too late to utilize their services to help you find a summer job if you are still looking.
