Exchange Federation

The federation of Exchange with UIUC has been completed.

We should be able to start seeing calendar free/busy and Lync availability information for UIUC folks now.

This was just implemented, it may take some time for things to show up on our side. It is not showing up for me yet at the time of this writing, however.

P.S. We have been federated with the UIC campus previously, and this should not be affected.

Off Campus IMAP & SMTP

There is an issue with SMTP relaying from off campus clients. This should only affect users that user IMAP (or similar) mail clients that need a SMTP server to relay through.

As this issue affects only a small amount of people, we don’t plan to address it until we get the new Barracuda devices put in next week.

For now, off campus users will need to relay their mail through their ISP, or connect using the VPN.

This issue will not affect a vast majority of our users who are using Outlook/Exchange based mail clients. They will continue to work as always.

Webmail Issues

Webmail has been moved to the Netscalar load balancer. At this point it is just a matter of the time it takes for the DNS change to propagate out to all machines. On campus, this should be very quick, but off-campus different ISPs seem to be taking longer than others.

Please check that you can access mail via webmail, Outlook, mobile devices, etc. on and off-campus if possible. Report any issues to the helpdesk.

Mail Changes – Tuesday, June 25

Tomorrow 6/25/13 we plan to move the Exchange Client Access Servers from the Kemp load balancers to the Netscaler load balancers at approx. 8am.

There should be no disruption to users, but it’s possible that some user computers will not pick up the DNS change as quickly as others.

In the case that happens, we can handle those case by case by flushing the machines DNS cache.

Update: Network Issues

Update: 2:35pm –

We believe we have resolved the issue causing the network problems. Please report any issues you may still encounter.

————————————-

We are aware of the network failures occurring while trying to access off-campus resources. ITS is currently troubleshooting the issue with extreme prejudice!

Update #2: SAN – Failed Hard Drive

There is some issue with a drive in our SAN (either it has failed or is having errors) that has caused the array to copy data over to the hotspare. The array is currently rebuilding which is causing some high latency in Exchange and other systems. No connected systems are failed at this time, but may have slower than normal response times.

I will try to get Dell here to replace the drive first thing in the A.M.

Update 3/1/2013: Dell has dispatched the replacement hard which should arrive around 1pm today. They recommend we update all drives in the array that are at firmware version KD03 to the newest version (KD0A)as soon as possible. This will be completed over the weekend when the array is at its lowest usage rates.

Right now the array is operating normally, but at a reduced redundancy.

Update #2 3/1/2013: The failed hard drive has been replaced. The SAN is now back to normal. We plan to update the firmware on the remaining drives over the weekend.

IE 10 for Windows 7

Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 has been released to Windows Update as an optional update. It was not originally planned to be released for Windows 7 by Microsoft, but dismal sales of Windows 8 has prompted MS to release the browser for Windows 7 as well.

High Latency in Outlook

We believe we have resolved the issue that was causing high latency in Outlook for the last few weeks. Please let us know if things seems smoother, or you are still encountering these types of issues.
