NETWORK REDUNDANCY TESTING

Who:     The entire campus could be affected; however we anticipate no service interruptions.

What:    Test of campus network, Primary routing switch failure.

When:  Thursday March 22, 2012 during the Maintenance window (5-7am)

Why:     Network Services strives to prevent outages by designing a network with built in redundancies.  The only real means of verifying this redundancy is to test them.  We feel confident in our design and therefore we are planning to test a portion of the network.  We will be testing the failover of the campus primary routing switch.

The test went fine all of the services we expect to see running continued when the Primary switch was shut down. The network monitoring software reported many links down but that was to be expected. One link that wasn’t being monitored was the secondary link to 3/4 of the Townhouse apartments and it had failed back in February. So that will be added to the monitoring software for the next test. All said a successful test.
