Pam Rodgers

After 13 years in ITS at UIS, Pam Rodgers has accepted a position with the Sangamon County Public Defender’s Office, which will start on July 30, 2012. As Microcomputer Coordinator, Pam has been responsible for leading the Learning Spaces Support team and for supporting and ensuring the functionality of all learning spaces on campus. Throughout her career at UIS, Pam has welcomed multiple new educational technology advancements.

Over the years, Pam has found ways to adapt, implement, teach, and troubleshoot these new technologies to optimize our clients’ experiences with them. Pam has accumulated many professional development achievements at UIS including being named Employee of the Month for the University. Pam is highly regarded on campus for her customer service skills, and she will be missed.

Pam’s position is critical to our operations, and we hope to keep her on staff in a part time basis to keep all projects on target as we prepare for and start the new academic year.

Citrix Upgrade

This morning we plan to upgrade the Citrix VDI environment to XenDesktop 4.6 Feature Pack 1  (http://assets.citrix.com/pb/xd5p6_0612/)

Some of the new features include:

Optimization Pack for Microsoft Lync 2010

Mobility Pack for VDI

During the upgrade we expect minimal impact on user experience.

Password Change for backupadm AD Account

In rolling out the new backup system, we chose to update the AD password for the backupadm account so that it was much stronger. However, it came to light recently that some systems may be using this account for non-backup purposes, which we were unaware of. If you know of a system that uses this account for something other than Commvault backups, please send me an e-mail listing the systems that use this account so we can determine the best way to proceed.

Thanks!

Cable TV Channels out

Due to ongoing contract negotiations between Viacom and Direct TV the following channels are currently without content.

Nickelodeon
BET
Logo
Spike TV
Comedy Central
MTV
VH1
VH1 Classic
MTV2
CMT
TV Land

I have been in touch with our content provider here is the Campus Televideo suggestion.

As many of you may know, DirecTV and Viacom are in negotiations and did not reach an agreement by the midnight deadline. As a result, Viacom has taken down their channels. This is a common occurrence between distributors and content providers that usually resolves itself within a few days.

Many of you have low student population students due to the summer so a wait and see approach over the next day or two may be the best option. However for any school who has a large summer or 12 month population please contact me directly and we will look for replacement channels.

As soon as we have additional information we will send it to you.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Network Scans

Beginning this month, Network Services team members will begin performing routine scans of all UIS campus networks. These scans will help us gather much valuable information about the network and the systems that are connected to it. Most scans will involve locating active network devices and performing mild, non-invasive probing of those devices to gather more information. While the scan results can be used for many different purposes, one key function is to determine the extent to which the devices on the network are vulnerable to a security breach. On ITS-managed systems, a more rigorous evaluation of the devices using authenticated connections may also be routinely performed to support proactive monitoring and alerting of active security threats.

Again, this should typically be non-invasive and have no noticeable impact on the devices or negatively affect network operations.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me directly.

Thanks!
