Password Reset Issues

Yesterday we had an issue with the password reset page and new employees were unable to claim their netID. Josh Irons brought the issue to my attention and provided me with log files outlining the issue. Josh worked with Brian and Myself to evaluate the script files that are executed at our location. We were able to determine that the issue was located at AITS and we contacted them for support. AITS worked on the Issue throughout the day and was able to fix the problem at approximately 4:30. Josh worked with AITS throughout the afternoon testing modifications made by AITS and reporting status to them.

Blackboard Security Issue

We received the following email from Chris Mueller.

I wanted to let everyone know that after several complaints from students of not being able to login to Blackboard, we discovered that if you type in ‘UIS Blackboard’ into Google search, you get taken to a site that looks just like the UIS Blackboard login page but the address is wrong.

Here is the link Google takes you too: http://www.bubz2020.appspot.com/bb.uis.edu

Sending out an e-mail of some kind might be necessary. I’ve told the student workers here tonight that if they receive any more phone calls, to have the student reset their password.

I have checked the link and it looks exactly like our blackboard site. I am sure they are probably logging passwords when someone logs in. This is a severe security risk. Someone should probably send out a message to the campus warning them of the situation.

New Graduate Assistant

The application development department has a new graduate assistant and she started today. Her name is Nikhitha Akula and she will be working out of Andrew’s old office HSB 105. If you are in the area please stop by her office, introduce yourself and make her feel welcome.

Password Reset page Jars update

At 11:00am today (5/5/2011) I will be working with Peter Herrig from AITS to try and get the Jars on the password reset page updated to the newest version. There may be a limited downtime for the page during the changeover.

Campus Announcements Delayed

The campus announcements were delayed this morning. There was an issue with the tomcat server causing the online evaluations to give an error. I tried to restart the tomcat service but it would not restart. I had to reboot the app server during the time that the campus announcements would have normally run. I ran the campus announcements manually this morning.

Password Reset Page

I have updated some files associated with the Password Reset Page as required by AITS. The files that I updated have to do with gateway communication between us and the broker. Everything seems to be working but if anyone experiences or hears that someone else is experiencing problems please let me know.

Thanks

eDocs

We are currently experiencing problems with edocs. We are resetting all the connections to see if that fixes the problem. The eDocs system should be back up momentarily.

Mobile IM client for iPhone and iPad

If you have an iPhone or iPad and you would like to use them to participate in the internal ITS instant message application, there’s an app for that. We have found that an app called Talkonaut can interface with our instant message service. Just go to the app store on your device. Search for Talkonaut (it has a picture of a rocket on the icon). Download the app and use yournetid@im.uis.edu as the username and your normal password to complete the setup. Once you have the app setup you should see a list of all the users already using the messaging service.

Enjoy

eDocs issues

There were two different eDocs issues over the last week.

The first issue was the loss of access due to license cleanup. We were desperately close to the max on our available licenses so we had to cleanup some unused licenses. We ran a script that targeted users with no files in their personal eDocs directory. We were able to release 2600 licenses from the system but some people who did not have anything in their personal directories lost access to their department folders. None of the files from the department directories have been removed, only the access to those individuals that had nothing in their personal folder. Department directory administrators can add those individuals that lost their access back to the directory without the loss of data. In order to eliminate this problem in the future please have all users of the department directories upload a file to their personal edocs account so that the script will skip them for removal in the future.

The second issue was with the upgrade of edocs from 7.1 to 7.2. After the upgrade, Windows XP users are no longer able to map a network drive. The reason this occurred is because Windows XP does not support encrypted authentication for mapped drives. For security reasons eDocs 7.2 eliminated the ability to authenticate with plain text passwords, thus removing the ability for Windows XP to map a drive. We have a 30 day trial version of a software provided by xythos (the company that makes eDocs), that we can use to help XP users map a drive while we work on a permanent solution.
